Mental Fitness, Forrester Center and SC Thrive are collaborating with multiple agencies to produce a symposium for educators in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The goal is to raise awareness among educators about mental illness and resiliency, provide resources for helping students, and evidence-based programming & training for educators.
Mental Fitness will be offering How to Manage Serious Mental Illness in Schools at no cost to educators thanks to a grant from the United Way of the Piedmont. The evidence-based training teaches educators about how to manage serious mental illness in schools, including updated facts and research about the six types of eating disorders and obesity prevention. Participants will receive 3 hours of CEU certification.
SC Thrive will be offering Mental Health First Aid training at no cost thanks to a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention tool – it improves the public’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with appropriate care. All participants will receive a 3- year certification.
Mental Health First Aid and NAMI Spartanburg and Greenville will also provide evidence-based workshops on suicide prevention and other strategies.
An agency resource fair will be placed in the lobby for educators to learn about other services in the area.
